Amid Backlash, OpenAI Pledges to Cover Data-Center Power Costs and Consult Communities on Build Plans
Facing local opposition over data centers' power, water and noise, OpenAI published a National Community Compact and a Compute Campus Policy Blueprint on November 5. It pledges to pay its full electricity costs and all grid-expansion expenses its projects require, to stop asking local officials to sign non-disclosure agreements, and to sign a community compact for every campus it owns and operates, with annual public reporting on its commitments. It matters because it is the industry's most concrete answer yet to the backlash against AI data-center buildout, shifting costs and transparency duties onto the builder instead of local residents.
