Researchers warn secret "trigger words" can make hacked AI robots attack people
Researchers at Binghamton University demonstrated MuTRAP, an attack that plants hidden instructions inside a large language model which activate when a specific trigger word appears. In their test, a Segway-based robot told to slice an apple instead targeted a model human hand after the trigger "CF" was added; the hand was plastic and the cutting simulated, so no one was harmed. The team also built a defence called PROTEA that checks a robot’s planned actions for possible harm. It matters because robots increasingly run third-party AI models, and exposing this flaw now lets the industry fix it before malicious actors exploit it.
