Meta has opened a public time service that authenticates every NTP packet using RFC 8915, closing a 40-year-old security hole in the protocol. NTP underpins TLS validation, so unauthenticated time has long been a weak link in internet security. It matters because a free, authenticated time source from a major operator gives the whole internet a practical way to close that gap.
