Google revises K-12 education AI policy: Gemini, Search and other services off by default
Google announced that from 2027, Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be off by default for school-managed K-12 student accounts, and only a school administrator can switch them on. The catch is that schools cannot keep traditional search while fully disabling AI: if AI is switched off entirely, students lose access to Google Search as well, because Google says search and AI are now deeply intertwined. The change puts the decision in schools hands, but forces them to choose between giving students AI tools and preserving a familiar research tool.
