Democrats run more anti-tech ads amid AI boom
According to an exclusive Semafor analysis from the Tech Oversight Project, Democrats in more than 130 federal and gubernatorial races aired anti-tech or anti-data-centre ads this cycle, compared with just two such Democratic ads from 2020 to 2024, and at about four times the rate of Republicans. The ads fault AI over price-gouging, harm to children and denied health coverage, and attack Republicans over data-centre water use and farmland. It matters because stricter-AI advocacy groups see the shift as leverage to push congressional Democrats and 2028 presidential contenders to take firmer positions on AI safety and data centres.
