The Pentagon wants to know who checks code when AI writes it

The U.S. Department of War's Instruction 8430.01, 'Accelerated Mission Software,' took effect on September 8, 2026, requiring AI-generated code to be treated as unvalidated until proven otherwise, with developers still accountable for its safety, function and integrity and human approval required for safety- or life-critical changes. It sets three conditions: traceability of the model, version and dataset used; verification to the same standard as human-written code; and data boundaries keeping government data and prompts out of external model training. It matters because it ties faster defense software delivery to auditable, verifiable AI governance, setting a template other regulated sectors may follow.
