US drone delivery race heats up: Google-backed Wing to invest $125 million in a drone factory, eyeing 270 Walmart stores
Alphabet's drone unit Wing will invest up to $125 million over two years to build a new drone factory in Fort Worth, Texas, with capacity to produce tens of thousands of delivery drones a year. The plant will support Walmart's plan to expand drone delivery to more than 270 stores by 2027; Wing already serves 19 Walmart stores in Dallas-Fort Worth. The announcement came a day after rival Zipline raised $1.5 billion at a $21.5 billion valuation and signed on for 300 more Walmart delivery sites, showing drone delivery is moving from trials to large-scale rollout.
