Under UK regulatory pressure, Snapchat turns off its Find Friends feature by default for minors in the country
UK regulator Ofcom says Snapchat has begun rolling out a change in the UK that turns off its Find Friends feature by default for users under 18; the feature previously recommended contacts based on age, location and existing friends. Ofcom called it an important and welcome child-safety improvement, though long overdue, and said it will monitor Snap to ensure full rollout within the month, with Snap also introducing highly effective age verification by the end of the year. The move shows the UK stepping up enforcement of protections for young users: firms that fail to comply face fines of up to 18 million pounds or 10% of qualifying global revenue, and the UK also plans to ban under-16s from social media.
