Introducing the Grid Protectors Program

OpenAI launched the Grid Protectors Program, a national effort to work with utilities so future compute campuses can cut electricity use when grids are strained. Its Georgia pilot, the Effingham County campus, includes up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response — roughly the average demand of 700,000 households — and Georgia Power projects about $950 million in annual customer savings from 2029 across its large-load portfolio. The program matters because AI data-center demand is surging, and OpenAI is pitching campus flexibility as a way to protect households from bearing those infrastructure costs.
