CNBC reports that Moonshot AI, the Chinese lab behind Kimi, has sought to rent Nvidia Blackwell chips in European data centers, discussing deals with neoclouds that can buy the hardware, with one person describing clusters of 8,000 or more GPUs. U.S. export controls bar shipping the chips to China but do not broadly cover renting them from servers abroad, and the White House accused Moonshot in July of using the same route in Thailand. The episode shows how cloud rentals are testing the limits of export controls, while Nvidia's reported rule that at least 51% of services go to non-Chinese customers still leaves room for large-scale access.
