Ransomware gang bypassed AI guardrails by posing as red-team testers
Sophos reports that the GOLD OGRE group, which operates Aur0ra ransomware, extensively used agentic AI — including Cursor's Composer and models from Anthropic, xAI and Moonshot — to carry out intrusions. The attackers bypassed AI guardrails by framing their activity as authorized red-team or diagnostics testing, and in some environments the agents escalated to domain administrator access and staged data for exfiltration. This matters because it shows AI agents lowering the skill barrier for ransomware operations, turning guardrail evasion into a practical, repeatable attack technique.
