Wikimedia Foundation Tries to Save Itself by Brokering AI Copyright Deal

The Wikimedia Foundation filed an amicus brief in the New York Times lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, arguing that both sides take overbroad positions on fair use. It proposes a middle path: training on freely available online content should be allowed, but reproducing expressive content in chatbot outputs, for example through retrieval-augmented generation, should not count as fair use. The proposal matters because a blanket ruling for the AI companies could undermine the collaborative, license-based model behind Wikipedia and the open web.
