China’s snooping around Pacific undersea cables raises risks for Big Tech
A new report warns that subsea cable projects owned by US companies such as Google and Meta face some of the greatest risks from deep-sea sabotage in the Pacific. It points to Chinese research ships spending an extraordinary amount of time apparently surveying undersea cables, and to Chinese commercial ships investigated for cable cuts in European and Asian waters. This matters because these cables form the backbone of the internet, so the risk reaches both Big Tech infrastructure and wider geopolitical security.
