Anthropic reverses course and pays for news content for the first time
Anthropic has signed its first licensing deal with a news publisher, the Associated Press, which let Claude display live AP election results on election night with source attribution. Financial terms and the length of the deal were not disclosed. The move matters because Anthropic had long argued that scraping publisher content was fair use, while publishers blocked its crawlers to force it to the negotiating table — and without licensed current data, Claude was severely limited on time-sensitive questions.
