Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
David Durman, a 45-year-old research administrator at the University of Kentucky, was granted a religious accommodation in September 2026 that excuses him from personal use of AI tools such as Copilot, Claude and ChatGPT at work. The American Humanist Association, which helped him seek the accommodation under Title VII, believes it is the first case of its kind for a humanist. It matters because it sets a precedent for conscience-based opt-outs from mandatory AI use, at a time when most Americans tell pollsters they are skeptical of AI.
