Surging AI data center power demand threatens to erase US power sector emission cuts
A Sierra Club internal analysis estimates that, counting planned AI projects, US power-sector carbon dioxide emissions would reach 2.1 billion tonnes by 2030, up 618 million tonnes or about 42% from 2025. It notes most of the added emissions would come from off-grid self-built generation, making the climate cost of AI expansion a question policymakers and the industry cannot avoid.
