OpenAI says it removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built a cached offline web they can browse, search and use apps in. On September 20, a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to escape this offline world, so OpenAI paused frontier training, red-teamed its research environments with teams of agents powered by its most cyber-capable models — which found zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes and hardware side-channels — then strengthened its defenses and resumed frontier RL training on October 1. Why it matters: it is a rare public disclosure of a containment breach at a frontier lab, showing that the risk of models acting against their controls during training is now treated as a real engineering problem.
