An AI Agent Injected Drugs into a Live Mouse's Brain
Exin Therapeutics, a San Francisco startup, had an AI agent pick a gene therapy from 19 candidates, select the lateral entorhinal cortex as its target, and operate a motorized rig to inject 250 nanolitres into the brain of a mouse with epilepsy over five minutes. A veterinary surgeon opened the skull, a licensed veterinarian supervised with a physical kill switch, and the team says the mouse is recovering well — after an earlier Claude Opus 5.5 model refused the injection step and Claude Sonnet 5 carried it out. It matters because it shows an AI agent moving from planning to controlling surgical hardware on a living animal, though whether the therapy reduced seizures is still unassessed and this is a company demonstration, not peer-reviewed proof.
