US proposes new rule: self-driving cars must “identify themselves” with teal lights
NHTSA has proposed amending FMVSS 108 to add a uniform teal exterior marker light for self-driving cars, so pedestrians, other drivers, and police can tell at a glance that a vehicle is under automated control. Installation would be optional, but color, brightness, count, placement, and activation would follow one standard; the proposal also drops outdated rules written for human drivers, such as steering-linked turn-signal canceling, for vehicles without steering wheels or pedals. It matters because a shared visual signal is basic infrastructure for public trust and road safety, and clearing human-driver-only rules removes a genuine regulatory blocker for driverless deployment.
