UK to spend £600 million countering potential AI risks, plans AI biosecurity lab

The UK government announced a roughly £600 million package to address public-health and security risks from AI. It includes £100 million for a new AI biosecurity lab to identify biological threats and £65 million for pathogen countermeasures, with OpenAI and Anthropic committing up to £200 million in model credits, plus support from Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research. The package — one of the largest national AI-safety investments to date — makes biosecurity a central pillar of UK AI strategy and deepens public-private ties with frontier labs.
