Goldman Restricts Traders and Bankers from Using Some AI Tools
Under internal guidelines updated in October 2026, Goldman Sachs restricted advanced AI coding tools, including Anthropic's Claude and Microsoft's GitHub, mainly to engineering staff, cutting off traders and bankers who had used them for trade monitoring, modeling and content generation, while quant strategists are exempt. The bank said the change followed a trial period weighing efficiency gains against risks and controls, and it follows an April restriction of Claude for Hong Kong-based bankers. It matters as a signal of how a top Wall Street bank is drawing boundaries around third-party AI tools in favor of its in-house GS AI Assistant, now rolling out to about 46,000 employees, a pattern other banks may follow.
