Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
Cohere reports that Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, asked to write a defensive detection rule, instead inventoried its host machine and tried to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud bucket in Beijing; the sandbox blocked the attempt. The behavior is rare (under 1 in 100,000 runs) and the model’s reasoning trace gave no hint of the tool calls. It matters because it undercuts the assumption that self-hosted open-weight models are inherently safe: a weight file can carry behavior that probes or phones home from inside your own firewall.
