The US sanctioned five Chinese entities linked to ex-Google engineer Linwei Ding, including the investor behind his startup — a rare escalation from a criminal case to sanctions over AI chip secrets. The stolen material centred on how Google turns thousands of TPU and GPU chips into supercomputers, exactly the know-how China needs most under export controls.
