As search traffic dries up, Reddit announces it is shifting to a logged-in experience
Reddit said in its third-quarter earnings that it is moving to a primarily logged-in experience as AI search cuts referrals, with search referrals down by more than 1 million per week on average in October. US daily users fell from 53.2 million to 50.7 million quarter over quarter, while revenue rose 53% year over year to 895 million dollars. The shift matters as a canary for the open web: Reddit wants to protect its data from AI scraping and monetize it through licensing instead.
