Old Popcorn Time app became a hidden backdoor affecting at least 250,000 to 350,000 Apple Macs
Security firm Eye Research found that an old auto-update component left behind by the unofficial Time4Popcorn app still runs at startup on Macs and trusts what it downloads. Researchers estimate 250,000 to 350,000 Macs are affected, and they used the mechanism itself to disable the component on more than a million Macs and Windows PCs before handing the domains to Shadowserver. It matters because there is no evidence of actual exploitation yet, but some update addresses remain outside researchers' control and no developer fix is available.
