Patch the Planet: global response coordination as agents uncover critical vulnerabilities

OpenAI unveiled Patch the Planet, its framework for coordinating global responses to critical vulnerabilities found by AI agents: over two months it led a coalition that fixed critical PHP flaws found by its Calif agent using GPT-5.6 Sol (Wiz independently found both), with PHP’s maintainers leading the fixes and partners including Wiz and Cloudflare. OpenAI calls it “one of the most impactful security issues in recent memory,” notes frontier AI found the bugs before attackers — a “Defender’s Window” — and committed $1 billion in subsidized Daybreak access for under-resourced defenders. The response drew in the White House’s Super Intelligence Force, ONCD, CISA and international partners. It matters because OpenAI says several more significant vulnerabilities are already found and expects such findings to “increase sharply” as agents get stronger.
