Meta ordered to pay historic $25 billion over Cambridge Analytica deception in New Mexico

A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay a historic $25 billion penalty after a jury found on September 25 that the company committed over 43 million violations of state consumer-protection laws tied to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, at $5,000 per violation. The state had sought $35–40 billion; the theoretical maximum was $219 billion. Meta says it will appeal, with chief legal officer C.J. Mahoney calling the ruling nearly impossible to do business under. It matters because it is among the largest verdicts in US legal history — while 48 other states settled for a combined $18 billion in August, New Mexico stood alone and won far more.
