GM to pay $220 million after selling customer Smart Driver data
GM is to pay $220 million over its handling of customer Smart Driver data: the system was marketed as a way for parents to monitor teen drivers or for adults to track their driving, but in 2024 it emerged the data had been shared with brokers who sold it to insurers, and some drivers saw premiums rise without knowing they had agreed to share it. GM and OnStar settled with the FTC last year, and the agreement finalized this January bans them from sharing geolocation or driver behavior data for five years. Why it matters: it puts a concrete price on carmakers monetizing driving data without clear consent.
