German courts rule Google liable for what its AI search says
Two German regional courts, in Munich and Aachen, have ruled that Google is liable for false statements in its AI Overviews and AI Mode, treating AI answers as Google's own words. The Aachen court banned Google from repeating a fabricated claim about a doctor, with fines of up to €250,000 per breach, while the Munich judgment ended in a settlement and is not binding precedent. The rulings matter because they could give Google publisher-style responsibility for AI-generated claims, at least in Germany.
