According to Bloomberg, an open-source agent originally built for authorised penetration testing was repurposed as the shared engine of breach campaigns in South Korea and Japan within weeks. The examined Japanese attack server targeted about 20 companies, almost all in Japan with nine in the same industry, while CrowdStrike tied the tool in South Korea to a likely Chinese-speaking, financially motivated actor that ran it mainly on DeepSeek v4.1-flash against financial firms starting in late September. It matters because it shows dual-use AI agents and cheap open models are already industrialising real-world, cross-border cybercrime.
